Join the Live Box Jam Session
Live Box began in 2000 at the Drum Arts Centre in Birmingham, allowing regional musicians a chance to cut their musical teeth. Whilst the Live Box sessions are underpinned with a jazz flavour and style, it is fundamentally about encouraging people of all ages and backgrounds with a big or small talent to come and get involved, whether it be vocals, playing an instrument, or something more unusual like poetry.
To take part all you have to do is come down to the Cathedral Ruins Marquee at 2pm on Saturday 27th May and put your name down on the list stating what you would like to do.
Live Box will consist of two performances by up and coming Birmingham saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings accompanies by the Live Box Crew with a jam session sandwiched in between.
We know there are lots of talented people in Coventry and Warwickshire, so don’t be shy and share your musical skills with a wider audience.
Collecting the Collective
Are you a budding young musician who would like to play with a famous jazz star as this year’s jazz festival?
If you are a young musician with some experience of playing jazz music and a reasonable ability on their instrument then this is your chance!
Free jazz workshops are being offered with the already established Phoenix Collective, which comprises members from previous jazz workshops. Highly rated international professional Israeli tenor sax player Gilad Atzmon will be joining the Phoenix Collective for rehearsals and a one-off free performance on Saturday 27 May at 1pm.
Participants do not need to be musical experts to take up a place on the course. The ability to read music would be an advantage, but most of the pieces will be learnt aurally.
Musicians interested in attending these workshops should contact Owen Dutton on 01788 810147, e-mail owen.dutton@tiscali.co.uk
The jazz workshops are an unusual element of the five-day bank holiday festival, supported and organised by the city’s Performing Arts Service.
